...he talked quite naturally while we ate – about the difficulty of finding words to describe the luminous mist, and why one has the desire to describe beauty." Perhaps it's an attempt to possess it, " I said." Or be possessed by it; perhaps that's the same thing, really. I suppose it's the complete identification with beauty one's seeking." The mist grew brighter and brighter. Dodie Smith
About This Quote

Kate Chopin was a writer of the American West, and her most famous story is "The Story of an Hour." In it, a woman is with her husband when he discovers a strange man attempting to rape a woman. The jealous husband attacks the stranger, and is killed. The woman, who had been with him the entire time, is now left alone with the corpse of her husband. In this short story, Kate Chopin creates a character who will be forever haunted by the events of that night, though she may never have known what actually happened.

This story had a profound impact on me as an author because I could relate to the character. I too at one point thought that my life was all completely pointless and that I had no purpose in writing stories. After some time away from writing and reading other stories and seeing authors succeed despite having had their own personal struggles, she made me realize that I was not alone after all.
